A refrigerated air dryer is a device used in compressed air systems to remove moisture and humidity from the air. It is an essential component in industrial applications where clean and dry compressed air is required to prevent damage to equipment and ensure efficient operation.

The refrigerated air dryer works on the principle of cooling the compressed air to a temperature below its dew point. The dew point is the temperature at which the air becomes saturated and condenses moisture. By cooling the compressed air, the refrigerated air dryer causes the water vapor to condense into liquid form, which is then separated and drained out of the system.

The major components of a refrigerated air dryer include a compressor, condenser, an air to refrigerant exchanger, air-to-air heat exchanger, moisture separator, drain valve, and a refrigeration system.

Here's how it generally operates:

  • Compressed air enters the air dryer through an inlet and flows into the air-to-air heat exchanger.
  • The heat exchanger cools down the incoming air using an outgoing dry & cold air.
  • Relatively cooled air then passes to air to a refrigerant exchanger (Evaporator) and then the refrigeration system, lowering its temperature.
  • As the temperature drops, the moisture present in the compressed air begins to condense into liquid form.
  • The condensed moisture is separated from the air in a moisture separator and drained out of the system.
  • The now dry and cooler compressed air passes through an air-to-air heat exchanger, where it is reheated using the outgoing warm air.
  • The reheated air then exits the air dryer through an outlet, ready for use in the compressed air system.
  • The maximum dew point attained by a refrigerated air dryer is +3 ℃ (Pressure dew point).

The resulting air quality is Class 4 as per ISO 8573.1.
